a fun one

redly6

You know when you're taking group photos, how there's always a "fun one?" I never liked those.
Until the other day when I was taking these pictures and I decided to just have fun.
So I got this one...

And this one...

And the rest were a little bit more normal.

50 states of brave introduces: ms. pennsylvania!

If you're just joining us, 50 States of Brave is a blogging project that celebrates the little opportunities we have to be brave everyday and the women who make these habits a way of life. As part of the project, everyone blogger is sending in a story of the bravest thing they've ever done for all of us to get to read, which makes us pretty excited.

The whole project is sponsored by Favoring Brave, my Etsy store. Each lady gets to pick an item from the store to model in her post and keep as a souvenir of her bravery!

Wanna see all of the brave ladies already featured? Visit our lovely archives or Pinterest page of bloggers and their Favoring Brave picks!

Wanna join in the fun and represent your state? There's more info about that at the bottom of this post.

Alright here's the good stuff, and I do mean good stuff. This post is incredible.

THE BRAVEST THING I’VE EVER DONE: LET GO AND MOVED ON

I’ve done a lot of brave stuff in my life.  Looking back, I never really thought about it as being brave.  It was just exciting and new and felt right.  At 21, I took off across the country to spend a summer in LA all by myself.  Shortly after college, I got married.  Six years later, I took a huge leap of faith and left a job that made me miserable.  Heck, even now I strap eight wheels to my feet every week and let girls try to beat the crap out of me in roller derby!  And so, here I am – settled in my small town, still married, homeowner (yeah, that’s brave!) and pretty darn happy.  I find that as I become more comfortable in my life, the big moments of bravery are fewer and farther between, but they are not altogether gone.

This past year has been a tough one.  I opened up about it a little bit back in March, which was brave in itself - but found it difficult to continue that dialogue once the situation continued to go unresolved.  Without going in to too much detail, my husband and I were ready to start a family, but apparently, my body was not.  We considered our options and dabbled in some non-invasive fertility treatment.  The more we tried, the harder it became.  And the harder it got, the more is swallowed all the good things in our life.  I’ve been raised to always go with my gut.  If it doesn’t feel right, then it’s not for me.  If you live your life this way, then you know what I mean.  I find it difficult to explain to people that feeling that invades your inner-most fibers, screaming “MOVE ON!”

There are a million and one quotes about letting go and moving on.  One in particular has always struck a chord with me: "We must be willing to let go of the life we have planned, so as to accept the life that is waiting for us."  So true.  I always felt that if it didn’t happen, it only meant that there was something else in store for us.  But knowing that and acting on it are two very different things.  At least when you’re angry, sad and frustrated, you know what to expect.  For some reason, picking yourself up and moving on takes way more strength.  And let’s not forget bravery.
For me, I had no idea what else I would do with my life.  We spent many years designing a lifestyle that would be perfect for an expanding family.  Suddenly, that just turned into nothing more than idle time.  Beyond the personal frustration, I feared what others would say or think.  Everyone has an opinion.  Period.  I feared being accused of not wanting to be a mother badly enough to make a few sacrifices or forever having my accomplishments trivialized next  to those who accomplish the same (and more) all while raising a family.  The more I let these fears and insecurities eat away at me, the more they ate away at my work, my happiness and my marriage.  It was time to move on.

So, I finally put on my big girl panties, took a deep breath, sought some help and have been slowly, but surely, letting go and moving on.  It wasn’t easy, but it has certainly been worth it.  This past month has brought more happiness and satisfaction than the previous ten combined.  My marriage has been filled with new hobbies, new goals and a new-found love and appreciation.  Last week, I had an amazing job fall into my lap and am filled to the brim with excitement about my new career.  I was even able to find actual, honest joy for a friend when she announced she was expecting!

It takes a lot of bravery to venture into the unknown.  Changing directions is not easy, but you never know what may be waiting if you don’t.  A little bravery is all it took to move on, take charge and truly enjoy this incredible life that’s waiting for me.

blank CDs

bluevelvet3

My conversation with the salesman at Office Depot:

Him: Welcome to Office Depot! Can I help you find something?
Me: Yes, I need blank CDs.
Him: Oh cool! What for?
Me: My students.
Him: Oh, what do you teach?
Me: Musical theater.
Him: Like Glee? You're like the teacher from Glee?! YOU'RE LIKE THAT ONE TEACHER GUY FROM GLEE!
Me: Ummm... sure.
Him: You should be on that show too.
Me: Thanks, now, uhh, the CDs?
Him: Oh right! Over here...

He was way too excited. Just saying.

But I guess I understand - I was way too excited to wear this blue velvet skate skirt from, guess where?

The AMERICAN GIRL STORE.

It has just been a day of inexplicable excitement.

It even made me want to curtsey.

out of season

coralpattern2

It has been in the sixties and seventies lately which has made for some unseasonable outfits. I feel like should be going to Easter services in this dress, but somehow it was perfect for the first day of Advent! Who saw that coming?

It has the best shape in the world - an instant feel good dress. And the coral print is pretty cool too.

fake holiday

collar5

Okay, so I have a confession to make. I wasn't really on my way to somewhere awesome when I took these pictures. I just felt like getting dressed up in a very holiday fashion, partly because I had just made this awesome pearl collar necklace. If you're thinking your neck needs one, or maybe a friend does as a Christmas gift, head on over to Favoring Brave for your very own.

i made it: cheddar biscuits

I have been known to make Red Lobster taste-alike biscuits more often than I should, and those are pretty darn easy. But these cheddar biscuits of my own creation are the EASIEST cheddar-y biscuits you can make.

Ingredients:

1 tube of refrigerated biscuits
Cheddar cheese
Garlic salt
4 tbsp. butter
  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
  • Grease a muffin tin with cooking spray.
  • Open the tube of biscuits and cut each biscuit (there should be 10) into as many small pieces as you want, at least 4-5. At first I tried rolling them each into little balls but that is totally unnecessary. They all bake how they want no matter what you do. Place all the little pieces of each biscuit into a spot on the muffin tin, so you should end up with 10 biscuits.
  • Whack off a little chunk of your butter and put in on top of each biscuit.
  • Sprinkle as much or as little cheddar cheese as you want over each biscuit.
  • Shake some garlic salt over the whole thing (not too much!) and call it good.
  • Bake 10-12 minutes.
Yum! I love these with chicken or fish for dinner or they make a good (but not too healthy...) snack too!

THE dress

You know what's crazy? It's already my 6 month anniversary! Where does the time go?

I realized a few weeks ago that I never really posted much about my wedding dress, but if there were one thing that was post worthy about my wedding, it would have to be the dress!

Right after I got engaged my darling aunt sent me a congrats note and offered to make my dress if I wanted her to. Now let's just establish something here. My aunt makes dresses for a living, and not just flimsy little cotton things either. She makes real life period costume dresses - think Queen Elizabeth in that one picture. So first of all, I was just so excited that she offered.

I hadn't ever really fallen in love with a catalogue wedding dress, but I had fallen in love with this little beauty while roaming around Edinburgh, Scotland with my (then) boyfriend (now husband!) and my roommate.

Gorgeous, right?

Well, Gorgeous here happens to cost upwards of 4,000 pounds, which happens to be even more in dollars, so in my mind Gorgeous and I were over before we even had a chance to begin.

Fast forward back to my aunt's offer. I hemmed and hawed a little, but finally I decided to ask her if she could do something like Gorgeous. If she couldn't, no big deal. I would find a dress that would be fine.

But then the fateful email came - she could do it!

There were months of redesigning, fabric shopping, and straight up magic on my aunt's part and early in May a long awaited package came for me in the mail.

This beautiful dress.

There is so much personal significance in it. Some of the rosettes on the shoulder are made from scraps from my grandma and great grandmother's wedding dresses. The bottom layers are embroidered with a double J design for John & Jill. There are also some Celtic crosses embroidered around the bottom to signify my Celtic ancestry.

All in all it was the most perfect wedding dress of all time. I will treasure it my whole life.

Jill
